If you are having RFI issues on HF, get an MFJ-1025 and a second antenna that is comparable to your main antenna. Both the external antenna and the MFJ-1025 will work well after you learn how to use it. The MFJ-1026 is like the MFJ-1025 except it comes with a small antenna and a preamp. The preamp is an ok feature but the small antenna is useless. The reason I'm recommending the Noise Canceling filter is because you maybe waiting awhile for FLP to repair the problem. To help speed up the process, locate where the RFI problem is (MFJ-856 is a good locating tool) then call FPL and ask for TVI quality control. You should then be connected to the executive offices of FPL. You will not speak to an executive but to a person that will make a work order to investigate the issue. FPL will keep in contact with you if you're professional and persistent. Give FPL an ample amount of time to investigate, at least two weeks. Then call or go online to the Florida Public Service Commission and make a complaint. My RFI experience with FPL took little more then four months to resolve by being professional and persistent. Two weeks before my RFI issue was repaired, I told FPL on the phone, "I gave ample amount of time for the resolution and it's not complete so my next step is to contact the Florida Public Service Commission". I believe that was the key in my resolution. Also I believe the hurricanes that affected Palm Beach County from 2004 through 2006 (2004 - Frances and Jeanne, 2005 - Wilma and Katrina, 2006 - Ernesto) created a huge task and expense for FPL and the only way they will fix RFI/TVI issues is by complaint. You would think after three years the power company would have completed the repairs by now. After everything I learned about power lines noise, if the power lines were water pipes a lot of Palm Beach County would be under water. Note: Most electronic devices today are not getting interference from TVI issues so ham radio operators have become one of the main complainers to the power companies. |
Hi, I'm Bob - KJ4EDA and I have been a resident in Palm Beach County, Florida for over 16 years. I have experienced horrific RFI from power lines. It was so bad I could not hear others on my radio's receive. FPL eventually fixed it but I still have intermittent interruptions of RFI. |
